Acadia National Park combines dramatic coastal scenery, granite peaks, peaceful lakes, and charming New England towns into one unforgettable destination. During our trip, we spent three full days exploring the park while staying in nearby Ellsworth, Maine, just a short drive from both Acadia and Bar Harbor. From whale watching and scenic hikes to lobster rolls and ocean views, Acadia quickly became one of our favorite national park experiences.
01Day 1: Whale Watching, Sand Beach, and Bar Harbor
We kicked off our Acadia adventure with a whale watching tour aboard a boat from Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. Heading out into the Gulf of Maine, we were rewarded with an incredible sight: two humpback whales surfacing near the boat. Watching these massive creatures emerge from the ocean was an unforgettable experience and a perfect introduction to Maine's coastal beauty.
After returning to shore, we made our way into Acadia National Park and visited Sand Beach. Tucked between rocky cliffs and surrounded by evergreen forests, this picturesque beach feels completely different from the sandy shorelines found elsewhere in the country. We spent time walking along the coastline and taking in the views before heading back toward town.
That evening, we explored the shops, restaurants, and waterfront of Bar Harbor. The bustling harbor, local boutiques, and coastal charm made it easy to see why the town has become one of Maine's most popular destinations. After dinner, we enjoyed a relaxing stroll through town before calling it a night.
02Day 2: The Beehive, Thunder Hole, and Cadillac Mountain
Our second day featured some of Acadia's most iconic attractions. We began with the Beehive Trail, one of the park's most famous hikes. Although short in distance, the trail delivers an exciting adventure with steep climbs, iron rungs, and spectacular views overlooking Sand Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Reaching the summit rewarded us with some of the best scenery in the park.
Next, we visited Thunder Hole, where incoming waves crash into a narrow rock inlet, creating thunderous sounds and dramatic sprays of water. Timing the visit with the waves made the experience even more impressive.
Later in the day, we started hiking around Jordan Pond, one of Acadia's most beautiful and peaceful locations. Unfortunately, our plans were interrupted when a steady Maine downpour rolled in, forcing us to cut the hike short and seek shelter.
Rather than let the weather spoil the day, we drove to Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on the U.S. Atlantic coast. Despite the rain, the mountain still offered sweeping views of the surrounding islands, forests, and shoreline. Watching the changing weather move across the landscape only added to the experience.
03Day 3: Jordan Pond, Bubble Rock, and Lobster Rolls
Determined to finish what we started, we returned to Jordan Pond on our final full day. With clear skies and much better weather, we completed the scenic loop around the pond, enjoying crystal-clear water and beautiful views of the Bubbles mountains reflected on the surface.
From there, we climbed South Bubble, one of Acadia's most popular hikes. Reaching the summit provided exceptional views of Jordan Pond and the surrounding landscape. We also visited the famous Bubble Rock, a massive glacial erratic perched improbably on the edge of the mountain. It's one of Acadia's most unique and photographed natural features.
To celebrate a great day of hiking, we wrapped up our trip with a stop at Travelin Lobster. After several days of exploring Maine, it felt only right to enjoy fresh lobster rolls before heading home. The combination of fresh seafood and outdoor adventure was the perfect ending to our Acadia experience.
04Final Thoughts
Acadia National Park offers a little bit of everything: rugged coastlines, mountain views, wildlife, ocean adventures, and charming small-town culture. In just three days, we experienced humpback whales, challenging hikes, scenic overlooks, rocky shorelines, peaceful lakes, and some of the best seafood Maine has to offer.
For families, Acadia is an outstanding destination because it combines outdoor adventure with easy access to lodging, restaurants, and attractions in Bar Harbor. Whether you're hiking the Beehive, watching waves crash at Thunder Hole, exploring Jordan Pond, or enjoying a lobster roll after a day on the trails, Acadia delivers the kind of memorable outdoor experiences that keep families coming back year after year.
