Your First Overnight

01Is it worth it?

Maybe you'll find after a few trips it just isn't for your family. But, some of our most memorable moments have come from camping trips. Epic beats exhaustion, campfires beat comfort. Push through a few trips and if you find it rewarding, buckle up for more adventures.

02Young Kids, Stage Fright?

Let's be honest, those first few nights could be sleepless but don't give up! Glowsticks, flashlights, or headlamps are all good things to give kids to feel safer throughout the night. Use the bathroom before bedtime, and expect that there will be late night needs. Push through it, they will adjust.

03Comfort of Home for Kids?

Yes, for the first nights of camping either in your backyard or car camping bring their pillows from home. Better yet, let them pack their own backpack of things they want to bring. If it fits in the backpack, they get to bring it. It created a fun way for them to become invested in the trip.

04What should I consider when choosing camping gear?

Separate necessity from luxury. Take inventory of things you already have, the chair you use for kids' sporting events works as a car camping chair. That 5-gallon water cooler you bought when you coached is your water supply. Learn the 7 Essentials: Shelter, Sleep System, Cooking, First Aid Kit, Lighting, Water, Clothing.

05What about Picky Eaters and Hungry Teens?

I have one of the pickiest eaters on the planet. Think simple like granola bars, protein bars, or dry cereal as an easy way to get started. If you get through the first few trips of exhaustion, you may want to start building your camp kitchen and become a short-order campsite cook.
